What happens on a run

You don't open a lesson. Words turn up on the road, and the road decides when you've seen one enough.

  1. 1

A new word stops the road

When a word is new, everything freezes. You hear it, then guess what it means. No timer, nothing coming at you.

Already know it? Tap A little or Well. Words you know well skip ahead and get checked again in a week.

The word stop card: こんばんは, three meanings to guess from, and Already know it? A little or Well
  2. 2

Keep the hooks that work for you

Every word comes with three memory hooks: what it sounds like, what it looks like, and a small silly scene.

Tick the ones that click, as many as you like, or write your own. They come back whenever you need them.

Three memory hooks for こんばんは, two of them ticked, and a button to write your own
  3. 3

Get one wrong and it comes back

A wrong gate pauses the road and shows the right word with your hook. Then the word returns a few gates later, again later that run, and again on the days below until it's yours.

    Between streets, play something else

Game gates open bonus games, and every one is played with your words: Dart Spin, Tower Stack, Word Train, Word Snake, Beat Tiles and twelve more.

They're all in the Arcade too, for when you just want five minutes.

Dart Spin: a spinning board with three Japanese words, throw at the one that means thank you

Pick a language. Say hi.

The first 500 words of each, every one with audio. Japanese can start in kana or romaji and Chinese in pinyin, until you're ready for the characters.

Six streets to run. Your first word is about a minute away.
